About Sleep Apnea

A common sleep disorder, sleep apnea is characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. Each pause will typically last 10 to 20 seconds, possibly more. These pauses can occur 20 to 30 times or more within a single hour.
 
People with sleep apnea do not have restful sleep because:
 
  • These brief episodes of shallow or stopped breathing occur so many times throughout the night
  • These interruptions cause many brief drops in the level of oxygen in the blood
  • Frequently moving out of deep sleep and into light sleep can result in poor sleep quality.
