Armodafinil Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
armodafinil is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune)
Armodafinil may decrease the level of cyclosporine in your blood, perhaps making it less effective. If you take these two medications together, your healthcare provider may need to measure the level of cyclosporine in your blood and adjust your dose as necessary.
Diazepam (Valium)
Armodafinil may increase the level of
diazepam in your blood, possibly increasing the risk of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to lower the dose of diazepam as a result.
Estrogen-Containing Medications
Armodafinil can decrease the level of estrogen medications in the blood. This can be especially important for women using
birth control pills, patches, or rings, as these forms of birth control may be less effective if combined with armodafinil. You should use an alternative or backup form of contraception (such as condoms) while taking armodafinil and for at least one month after starting the drug.
Many Antibiotics or Antifungals
Combining armodafinil with certain antibiotics or antifungals may increase the level of armodafinil in your blood. Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take a lower armodafinil dosage as a result. Check with your healthcare provider before taking armodafinil with any of these medications.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
It is not known if it is safe to take armodafinil with an MAOI. Since medications similar to armodafinil interact dangerously with MAOIs, it is a good idea to avoid taking armodafinil with an MAOI until more information is available.
